Instant City: Life and Death in Karachi gives a comprehensive insight on various issues taking place in the city. Steve Inskeep, the writer has not focussed on one problematic area or agenda in the city, but has tried to touch upon too many issues which keeps the reader's interest and has saved the book from becoming monotonous.
The first phase of the book is about what happened on MA Jinnah road in the city on the 28th of december 2009. A bomb blast had taken place while the ashura processions were going on. By relating to this incident he threw light on the conflicts going on within the religious sects in the city and how they have held back the city from becoming peaceful. Then the writer went on to dicuss the significant landmarks of the largest city in Pakistan. Inskeep also mentioned the urban projects which are being given importance to in the city such as large shopping malls being built, expensive residential complexes and the difficulties which these projects face. The writer has concluded the book by showing the reader the downside of the rapid urban development and its impact on the daily life of the people living in the city.
Instant City is a good book to read for those who want to touch upon all the facts and issues going on in the city, it provides an informative overview without going into too much detail on each topic.
